about

Good Serious Fun comes as a recent instalment of Flynn McHardy’s solo sonic endeavours. He currently performs as part of Manchester-based trad folk group Brown Wimpenny, in which he plays guitar and is also a constituent part of acclaimed children's music quintet Hedgehog. With his musical sensibilities formed in appreciation and performance of improvised and rock music respectively, McHardy’s solo work acts as a space, aside from his various collaborative projects, to reflect on how you listen to music.
Broken into six tracks, Good Serious Fun plunges you through a flurry of conflicting sonic environments. You traverse a cacophony of melodic bleeping and scrambled clangs, before finding solace in the serene ambiance of a delightful park. Feelings of awe and sentimentality shatter, hurling you into damp caverns of whirling echoes. Grating drilling erupts, throwing you into the busy sounds of bus conversations and singing street performers. You may question why you must suffer through seemingly perpetual incongruency, but the album offers the listener some recompense through the recurrent use of field recordings, embedded amid the granular chaos. Taken as a whole, Good Serious Fun operates via a symbiosis that condensely oozes sublimity and a sense of play.
